What is SSY?
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a small-savings scheme for the girl child under 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'. Open the account at any Post Office or authorised bank before the girl turns 10. Deposit for 15 years. Account matures when she turns 21. Interest is set quarterly by the government and is currently the highest among small-savings schemes.
Key rules
- One account per girl child. Maximum two accounts per family (twins exempt).
- Tenure: 21 years from opening (or marriage after 18, whichever earlier).
- Premature withdrawal: up to 50% after age 18 for higher education.
- EEE — contributions 80C, interest tax-free, maturity tax-free.
SSY pays ~1 percentage point more right now (8.2% vs 7.1%). PPF is more flexible — open at any age, you control it. Many parents do both.
