What is CAGR?

CAGR is the constant year-on-year growth rate that would convert your starting value into your ending value. Useful because it smoothens lumpy yearly returns into one comparable number.

CAGR = (End / Start)1/n − 1

When CAGR misleads

  • Picking a market top as start: CAGR will look poor even if the underlying business is sound.
  • Short periods: 1–2 year CAGR is just a noisy point estimate.
  • SIPs: use XIRR for cashflows over time — CAGR assumes a single lumpsum.
Absolute return is total %. CAGR is the per-year equivalent. ₹100 → ₹200 over 5 years = 100% absolute, 14.87% CAGR.
CAGR is for one cashflow. XIRR is CAGR generalised to multiple cashflows (SIPs, partial withdrawals).
